“Idol” Contestant’s Fiancé Suffered Traumatic Brain Injury

28-Jan-2011 The Chicago area auditions of popular talent show “American Idol” aired this past week. One of the highlights was a contestant whose fiancé suffered a traumatic brain injury just two months prior to their wedding date. The contestant, Chris Medina, sang “Breakeven” by the Script - a performance that was as compelling as his story of his fiancé’s traumatic brain injury.

The Oak Forest native gave a brief synopsis of his relationship with fiancé Juliana, including footage of his proposal at a Starbucks where she worked after six years of dating. The story took a sad turn when he explained that Juliana sustained a traumatic brain injury before they were able to wed. According to Medina, “Everything changed. We’re still not married.”

While things have changed, Medina hasn’t abandoned or forgotten about his bride to be. He now acts as her caretaker, and according to the Chicago Sun-Times “he sings with local band the Able Body and is raising money for the Juliana Recovery Fund through the Laurus Foundation.” Many people, including doctors, said Juliana would never wake up following her traumatic brain injury. But Medina refused to give up on her.

"I was about to make vows just two months from the accident – through thick and thin, 'til death do us part, for better or worse," he said. "What kind of guy would I be if I walked out when she needed me the most?"

Unfortunately, a brain injury lawyer in Chicago could tell you just how common traumatic brain injuries in Chicago and nationwide are. Whether caused by an accident, like Juliana’s traumatic brain injury or some other causes, the result is almost always life altering.

Traumatic Brain Injuries
Traumatic brain injuries can occur when the brain experiences a sudden physical trauma, such as when an individual is in an accident and can be catastrophic. Serious TBIs can result in cognitive deficits, impaired speech and language, sensory difficulties, vision problems, hearing loss, seizures, chronic pain, paralysis, sleep disorders, bowel and bladder control issues, emotional problems, depression, irritability, aggression, and death.

While no one can completely reverse the effects of a traumatic brain injury in Chicago, a personal injury lawyer in Chicago may be able to help. An experienced brain injury lawyer in Chicago can help the victim and his or her family recover damages to help pay for medical expenses, pain and suffering caused by a traumatic brain injury.
