Heavy Equipment Operators
Chicago workers’ compensation lawyers often encounter claimants who have been injured while working on or around heavy machinery. Anyone who labors in close proximity to multi-ton machines that generate lots of heat and toxic exhaust is at higher risk for developing a wide array of medical problems. Here is an incomplete list of common heavy equipment injuries:
- Crushing injuries – the fantastic forces which construction grade machinery employ to build, degrade, or support large projects can do swift and significant damage to human tissues and bone. Some common crushing injuries include rollovers, pinching, compression, and torsion (twisting related) injuries.
- Burns – heavy machinery can get extremely hot, particularly during operation. If an unlucky or careless construction worker touches hot metal or puts inflammable liquids too close to said machinery, scorching and disfiguring burns can result.
- Falls – Some pieces of heavy machinery -- particularly cranes, bulldozers and hoisting devices -- can put workers at extremely high risk of falling. A drop down an unguarded fifty foot elevator shaft can obviously lead to severe injuries and even death. But a three foot fall out of a truck cab can be just as dangerous, depending on circumstances.
- Inhalation injuries – Industrial machines often use diesel fuels and emit noxious fumes while operating. The dust and debris kicked up by these machines combined with the fuel and exhaust spewed into the air can cause asthma, fainting, and dizziness. These problems can then lead to errors in judgment which can then cause other onsite injuries.
