CBS 2 investigative reporter Dave Savini pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges of driving under the influence stemming from an accident that took place on January 4, 2014.  Savini was arrested by Naperville police after a minor accident in a Taco Bell parking lot, and was cited for drunken driving, hit and run, battery, and child endangerment.

Savini was arrested after the accident, after he pushed the other vehicle’s driver before driving away. The other driver called 911, and an officer stopped Savini’s car shortly after. Savini had two children under the age of 18 with him. On Tuesday, all of the charges except for driving under the influence were dropped.

Consequences of DUI and Unsafe Driving

Of course, there are plenty of consequences to driving drunk or even distracted. In this instance, thankfully no one was hurt badly, however that’s not always the case. As in a case earlier this week that involved a drunk driver, oftentimes the results of impaired driving include severe injuries and fatalities.

In this case, Savini’s license will be temporarily suspended, and he has also agreed to pay $3,185 in fines and fees. He also has to attend a victim impact panel, receive alcohol counseling, pay restitution, and perform 200 hours of community service. But perhaps the main consequence of driving drunk is putting other people on the road at risk. Your risk of getting into an accident is higher when you drive impaired, and causing an accident can cause a lot of damages, injuries, and worse.

When to Contact a Lawyer

If you’ve been involved in any type of car accident, it may be beneficial to get a lawyer involved to help with the details, damage, and possible reimbursement. With accidents that involve drunken driving, it’s always a good idea to seek legal help. If you were hit by a drunk driver, you will most likely need help dealing with insurance companies and medical bills—and going it alone, while it may be possible, is more stressful than getting legal help. Contacting a car accident lawyer may be the difference between getting the compensation you deserve and having the case ignored.
