Motorcycle Gang Vs SUV: No One Wins

Written by Malman Law, reviewed by Steve J. Malman.

Unless you haven’t been paying much attention to the news lately, you’ve probably heard of the incident that happened in New York City between a group of motorcyclists and an SUV driver. While it’s rather open for debate what really happened, the video that a biker in the group posted to the internet certainly shows a few things—first, that one of the bikers brake-checked the SUV; second, that the SUV rolled over some bikes (and, as we have now learned, one biker); and third, that the bikers chased the SUV through traffic, and when the car stopped, some of the bikers broke the SUVs windows and beat the driver. Whatever happened to cause this, motorcycle and car accidents alike can have very serious consequences. While no one in the car was hurt by a collision, people did get hurt, and it’s likely that lawsuits will be filed over this incident.

Dangers of Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcycle accidents can be particularly devastating for the people involved in them, since the drivers are nowhere near as protected as a driver of a car is. No matter who is at fault, a motorcycle collision can cause the biker to fly off of the bike, or get crushed underneath it. Since many riders don’t wear helmets, there is a great risk of head and neck injuries as well. If riders don’t wear protective gear, there is also the risk of experiencing road rash, which happens when riders come off the bike during an accident and are scraped along the street. It’s important for bikers to be highly aware of their surroundings at all times when riding, and it is also important for them to drive safely so as to avoid being in an accident.

Importance of Safe Driving

Of course, the responsibility does not fall solely on motorcyclists for safe driving. All drivers should be aware of what is going on around them and try to anticipate any potential problems arising. In the case of this SUV-motorcycle gang incident, it’s hard to say who started the problem, but it’s pretty easy to say that it was highly avoidable. Drivers need to drive defensively, not offensively—in the case of something like this, there’s no doubt legal representation will be needed at some point. Medical bills stack up for injured people fast, and people will want to debate the legality of everything that went down. It’s important if you’re involved in an auto accident, no matter what sort of vehicle you were driving or who was at fault, to seek legal help with the case. This way, someone who is well-versed in policies and laws will be on your side and you won’t have to fight the case alone.
