Nursing Home Resident’s Daughter Speaks Out

Nursing homes are responsible for reporting all injuries accurately and within a timely manner. A victim of neglect can seriously suffer additional injuries if any type of fall or injury is ignored by nursing home staff. A victim and their family should consult with a nursing home abuse attorney to fully understand the rights of a victim who has suffered a serious injury due to nursing home neglect or abuse. By consulting with an Illinois nursing home abuse attorney, a victim and their family can be assured that they are approaching the legal process accurately and efficiently. A recent report by the News-Sun of the Sun-Times featured a woman’s story of her approach in advocating for the rights of the elderly who are being cared for by nursing homes.

The victim’s daughter reported that the nursing home where her 87-year-old mother was being cared for due to Alzheimer’s stated that her mother suffered a black eye and severely fractured jaw due to an abscessed tooth. These injuries caused the victim to seek treatment at the Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan. The victim’s daughter said that she does not believe this story and wants to investigate her mother’s injuries further. Nursing home lawyers help residents who have been affected by negligence or abuse, full compensation.

To endure the concerns of treatment, the victim’s daughter said that she wants to make her and her mother’s experience with a nursing home public. She stated to the News-Sun, “This is not about money. This is about awareness for anyone with elderlies in a nursing home. I had to get involved.”

While the nursing home resident was being treated in Vista Medical Center East, the surgeon told her daughter that the injuries suffered could not have been caused by an abscess and were likely caused by a fall or other injury. The daughter then decided to notify the police of the case to start and investigation. Due to the victim’s injuries, surgery was performed to insert a plate into her jaw.

When additional medical attention is needed after an injury due to negligence, additional medical bills and stress can add up. Nursing home abuse attorneys can provide legal representation and a thorough investigation to relieve these extra stressors so that a family can focus on healing. The attorneys at Malman Law advocate for nursing homes to practice at the highest standards given by law.

According to the report by the News-Sun, the same nursing home has failed to accurately report injuries to other residents’ families as well. Since this incident occurred, the daughter of the victim and other friends and family members have opted to be an advocate to speak out against nursing home abuse.

Community leaders and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) have stepped up in support of fighting nursing home abuse and neglect. They gathered together in prayer outside of the nursing home where the story of the 87-year-old woman occurred and also asked for the Illinois Department of Public Health to become involved in the cases.
