Remembering the CTA Train Derailment

For all of us who ride the “L”, no matter what color line we’re on, the thought of falling off the edge has crossed our minds at least once.  And if you ride around the Loop, you have thought about it more than once. The CTA goes to great lengths to ensure there is adequate distance between trains and usually to the moans and groans of passengers as they sit motionless waiting for signal clearance. But even though these signal clearances may be annoying, they’re for good reason: one train did not knocked off the tracks on February 4th, 1997 killing 11 people and injuring over 180.  While this story may only be known to older passengers and Chicago train accident attorneys, it was a nightmare scenario and is responsible for the airtight security the trains undergo today.

The accident occurred during evening rush hour at the bend around Lake and Wabash while one train sat waiting for passengers. Another train rear-ended it at low speed, but the train kept applying pressure and three cars around the bend could not handle the force and toppled over onto the street. The responsible conductor was found to have smoked marijuana, had already caused a derailment that day, and had an overall record of poor performance. The CTA faced serious legal battles and numerous train accident attorneys fought the case.

Find a Train Accident Attorney in Chicago

Although bus accidents are much more common than train accidents, if you do suffer an injury on a train you must seek the counsel of a Chicago train accident attorney right away. You should never be subjected to injury beyond your control while riding public transportation, and if you are injured you should never have to pay a dime of your own money. Many people are unaware of the rights they have and typically do not file a complaint or the advice of a train accident attorney which is certainly not the best course of action. Always be sure to seek help immediately after the event because the more time in between in the event and your claim will complicate the process.
