Steps to Take After a Car Accident

Written by Malman Law, reviewed by Steve J. Malman.

Reckless or simply inattentive drivers are often responsible for accidents that result in mild to severe injury, and sometimes even the deaths of others. If you have been injured in a car accident and would like to seek compensation, there are steps to take immediately following the incident. If you are too injured to follow these steps, contact a car accident attorney right away to get you started on your way to compensation.

Never Take the Blame

Because your perception of the accident could be affected by emotional trauma or sustained injuries, it’s important not to take responsibility for the accident, even if you suspect it may have been partially your fault. Try not to admit fault to anyone involved; instead, work on getting treatment and let your insurance take care of the details of the accident.

Get Medical Attention

Even if your injuries don’t seem serious, there may be injuries you are unaware of because of shock or a delay of symptoms. Have a doctor administer a full examination to avoid risk of serious complications

Take Photos and Notes

You or someone you know should take photographs of your injuries. Scrapes, cuts and bruises often heal quickly, which is why it’s crucial to take photos right after seeking medical attention. Make sure you write down the names of all medical professionals you see or have been referred to since the accident, and keep receipts for all medical-expenses. Also, obtain a copy of the police report to ensure that all items you’ve noted are accurate.

Consult an Attorney

Discuss your car accident case with a personal injury attorney as soon as possible. They can not only help build your case with the evidence you’ve gathered, but also protect your rights by making sure you take the right overall course of action. Request a free consultation today!
