Every year on the Fourth of July, people gather with friends and family to celebrate. Barbecues, fireworks, and fun are always a part of these parties, but all too often, problems arise when people get in the car after these celebrations. Each year, thousands of people are involved in car accidents over the holiday, resulting in hundreds of injuries and even deaths. Information from the Illinois Department of Transportation shows staggering statistics, and the personal injury lawyers at Malman Law want to take this chance to remind you to drive safely over the holiday weekend, by way of a helpful, informative infographic.
The infographic, designed by Malman Law, shows the prevalence of holiday-weekend car accidents, including those caused by alcohol. With numbers like the ones shown, it’s important for drivers to not only be more careful and alert than usual, but also to know what their options are should they become involved in such an accident.
An average of 843 people are injured every 4th of July weekend, with 12 of those injuries being fatal. These are alarming figures, and sadly, many of them could have likely been prevented—57.5% of fatal car crashes are alcohol-related. In 2011, there were more than two thousand car crashes over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. When you’re involved in a car accident, you may get injured and need medical attention, and if a negligent party caused the car crash, you may need to speak with a personal injury attorney to learn about your rights regarding compensation for medical bills and lost wages.
People should plan to abstain from alcohol if they have to drive, but it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan for transportation if plans change. Arranging a designated driver before drinking starts is smart, and party hosts may want to offer their guests a list of phone numbers for cab companies at the end of the night. Staying off the road if you’ve been drinking is a no-brainer, but even when you’re sober, it’s important to drive with extra caution in case some of the other drivers weren’t as responsible. If you do unfortunately become involved in a crash, Malman Law is here to help. Call us for a free, no-obligation consultation to find out more about your rights.
