Unfortunate Fatal Crash

Written by Malman Law, reviewed by Steve J. Malman.

The accident attorneys at Malman Law, are mourning the loss of an Illinois tollway worker due to a tragic accident that occurred late Monday evening. Also involved in the accident was a state trooper who is currently under medical care after being critically hurt. While the accident is still under investigation, authorities reported that the accident occurred when the tollway worker pulled over to help a semi-truck that had broken down and another semi-truck crashed into the toll-worker’s truck and the state trooper’s car.

While the accident is still under investigation, Illinois leaders are reminding all to stay clear of emergency vehicles on the side of a road. Scott’s Law—passed after a Chicago Fire Department Lt. was killed by a drunken driver when he was on the scene of a crash on an Illinois freeway in 2011—requires that all drivers change lanes when possible, reduce speed and proceed with caution when they see flashing emergency lights. This law is also known as the, “move over law.”

This unfortunate accident reminds us all of the risk that public workers take to keep our highways safer for all persons on the road. Again, our attorneys salute such heroic actions by our public workers in Illinois, and mourn for the family, friends, and all who knew the young tollway worker who lost his life helping another late Monday evening.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the toll-worker’s sister said of him, “He just loved it. He always looked forward to it when it came to snow. He was just a hard worker.”

The Chicago Tribune also reported that Gov. Quinn made a statement of this accident, “Both he and the injured state trooper were doing heroic work — assisting their fellow citizens in an emergency. Both men were committed to keeping our roads safe and to helping those in need… Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and fellow employees during this difficult time.”

If you or a loved one were injured in an accident, call the Malman Law, today. Our accident attorneys provide legal representation so that you and your loved ones can focus on healing in such a tragic and difficult time.
