Miraculous Recovery

Miraculous Recovery from Traumatic Brain Injury

In what his family is attributing to “the best Christmas present ever”, 21 year old Sam Schmid has remarkably come out of a coma and appears to be on the road to recovery from an October traumatic brain injury. The young man was involved in a five-car accident in Tucson on October 19, which occurred when a van swerved into his lane and caused the Jeep he was riding in to hit a light pole before ultimately landing on its side.

Schmid sustained several broken bones, requiring surgery, and traumatic brain injuries. Doctors were unsure whether Schimd would make a recovery from his injuries, especially as he remained in a coma two months after the accident.

However, “as hospital officials began palliative care and broached the subject of organ donation with his family, Schmid began to respond, holding up two fingers on command. Today he is walking with the aid of a walker, and his speech, although slow, has improved.

Doctors say he will likely have a complete recovery. He even hopes to get a day pass from the hospital to celebrate the holidays with his large extended family,” reports Good Morning America.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

An acquired brain injury that can occur when the brain experiences a sudden physical trauma, such as when it is violently and suddenly struck or pierced by an object, traumatic brain injuries can prove catastrophic. Serious TBIs can result in cognitive deficits, impaired speech and language, sensory difficulties, vision problems, hearing loss, seizures, chronic pain, paralysis, sleep disorders, bowel and bladder control issues, emotional problems, depression, irritability, aggression, and death.

Sustaining any kind of injury during a Chicago car crash can be difficult. There are likely medical expenses, recovery costs, lost wages, property damage, and other losses and costs. If your injury was a catastrophic one, such as a traumatic brain injury or a spinal cord injury, the expenses may be astronomical. Our Chicago, Illinois traumatic brain injury lawyers are familiar with the havoc, pain, and suffering that a TBI can wreak on the victim, family, and friends. It is important that the parties responsible for your traumatic injuries be held liable.
