Do GPS Systems Distract Drivers?

GPS systems – or global positioning systems – are common devices that motor vehicle drivers use for getting directions to and from a destination. While some of these devices are external devices that a driver can mount in his or her vehicle, on many newer vehicles, GPS technology is directly built into the vehicle. Some drivers also use their smartphones for directions while driving.

How GPS Devices Distract Drivers

GPS devices – including those that are built into a vehicle’s onboard technology – can be distracting for drivers and can lead to serious motor vehicle collisions. Many GPS devices not only make sounds but also show images that direct a driver where to turn and which road to take while traveling to a final destination. GPS devices can divert a driver’s attention away from the road, causing the driver to look at the device instead of the road. A driver’s attention may also be diverted if the driver attempts to program (or re-program) the device while he or she is still driving. 

A driver who is paying attention to a GPS device instead of the road may do one or more of the following:

1. Rear-end a motor vehicle in front of the driver
2. Weave in and out of traffic or switch lanes into the path of an oncoming vehicle
3. Cross the center line on a dual highway or road, resulting in a head-on collision
4. Smash into a stationary object along the side of the road, such as a concrete block or median strip
5. Strike a pedestrian who is lawfully present in the crosswalk at an intersection
6. Disregard a traffic control device, such as a traffic light or stop sign, bringing about a serious collision
