A man involved in a deadly car crash in November 2013 has been charged with aggravated DUI causing a fatality, involuntary manslaughter, and reckless homicide. Ralph A. Leon, of the 5400 block of North Sheridan Road, was speeding on the Dan Ryan Expressway near 91st street on November 1, when he crashed into a car, causing it to swerve. He then went over four lanes of traffic before crashing into a dump truck being driven by 56-year old Alfredo Valladeres, who was on his way home. Valladeres was ejected from the truck. He suffered lacerations and multiple fractures, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

DUI Crash Details

Police at the scene of the crash said that Leon looked “Very high,” and thus was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center. There, he was given a DUI test, which found cocaine in his system.  Leon has been charged with aggravated DUI in connection with Valladeres’ death, and it’s not his first conviction – Leon has one other DUI conviction, from 1993. Additionally, he was convicted of attempted burglary in 1973 and has seven other misdemeanors on his record, including the aforementioned 1993 DUI charge.  Leon is currently being held, in lieu of $1 million bond, and his next court date is scheduled for February 25, 2014. No one else was injured in the wreck.
