Drowsy Driving Prevention Week is in November

It is no secret that fatigued driving can result in a serious motor vehicle collision that has the potential to injure all of the involved drivers. When motor vehicle drivers – including the operators of large tractor-trailers and big rigs – operate their vehicles while fatigued, they could cause their vehicles to collide with another vehicle (or even to run off the road and into a stationary object). When that occurs, serious injuries can result that often require extensive medical treatment and expenses.

If you or a loved one has recently been involved in a car accident that was caused by a fatigued driver, let the Chicago car accident lawyers at Malman Law assist you with pursuing a claim or filing a lawsuit against the responsible party. Preventing Drowsy Driving

The National Sleep Foundation has recently declared that the week of November 3 through November 10, 2019, is Drowsy Driving Prevention Week. The purpose of this week is to draw additional attention to the seriousness and dangers of operating a motor vehicle on the roadway while fatigued.

According to statistics, fatigued drivers are responsible for over 6,400 motor vehicle accident deaths across the United States every year. The purpose of this week is to draw attention to this statistic and hopefully, to encourage drivers not to operate their vehicles without the proper amount of sleep.

What Can Happen When a Fatigued Driver gets behind the Wheel?

Fatigued driving can have very serious consequences on Chicago roadways. When a driver gets behind the wheel without sufficient sleep, any of the following could occur:

  • The driver could fall asleep at the wheel and cause his or her vehicle to collide with another vehicle
  • The driver could cause his or her vehicle to drift into another lane of travel and collide with another vehicle
  • The driver could cause his or her vehicle to strike a pedestrian at a crosswalk or on a sidewalk
  • The driver could strike a stationary object on the side of the road, causing himself/herself and any passengers to suffer injuries in the collision
