Factory Work Injuries and How to Avoid Them

Written by Malman Law, reviewed by Steve J. Malman.

Like construction work, factory work has its own set of risks for workers. Even companies that pay close attention to safety provisions will still often have a few injuries reported every year. Taking care to avoid these types of injuries isn’t difficult, but even if you do get injured, you don’t have to face the medical bills and lost wages on your own—a workers compensation lawyer can help.

Types of Injuries

There are several different kinds of common factory injuries. Slip and falls happen commonly, due to spills that haven’t been cleaned up. Factory floors are typically concrete, making them already somewhat slippery, and oil or water spills can make them even more dangerous. Machinery-related injuries like getting crushed by or stuck in a machine happen, as does electrocution. Perhaps the most common, however, are overuse injuries and exposure injuries. Overuse issues happen when a person uses the same muscles to do the same task over and over and it causes injury, while exposure has to do with someone breathing in or ingesting dust, particles, chemicals, and even radioactive material.

What to Do if You Do Get Injured

Avoiding injury can be difficult, especially in the case of overuse and exposure. If you do get injured or think you have chronic problems stemming from work conditions, seeking medical attention is important, as is contacting workers compensation attorneys. You may need to see a work-provided doctor for an exam, but you do not have to seek treatment from that doctor; you can be treated by a doctor or hospital of your choosing. After getting medical care, contacting legal help, such as a workers comp lawyer, is a good next step as a lawyer will be able to guide you through the best path for getting compensation for your injury.
