Traffic JamWhether you are commuting to work or driving to your spring vacation spot, now that winter is over you will likely see an increase in the number of cars on the road. Here are five tips to help you stay safe in the driver’s seat this spring.

Avoid Distractions Behind the Wheel

Distracted drivers cause thousands of avoidable accidents every year. From eating to texting, anything that takes your focus off of the road puts you at greater risk of either directly causing or being unable to avoid an accident. Prepare for your trip, and consider putting your phone out of reach while you are behind the wheel. [Read more] about the dangers of distracted driving. {link to Distracted Driving blog post}

Have Your Vehicle Serviced or Repaired

The spring is a great time to have your vehicle serviced or repaired. If you used the harsh winter as an excuse for putting off your next oil change or having a mechanic look at those squeaky brakes, now is the time to get caught up. With more and more people hitting the road as the weather improves, taking care of your car can help you avoid collisions in traffic.

Anticipate Motorcycle Riders, Bicyclists, and Pedestrians

Spring is also the time when motorcycle riders, bicyclists, and pedestrians begin to reemerge. After months of winter driving, it is important remind yourself to watch out for these other users of the road. From commuters walking in downtown Chicago to cyclists on endurance rides in rural Illinois, they can be anywhere at any time. Whether on two wheels or on foot, riders and pedestrians have rights that drivers must respect and observe.

Observe the Speed Limit and Other Rules of the Road

Speed limits exist for a reason. Speeding is dangerous, even under ideal road and weather conditions. Driving fast gives you less time to react to events on the road. For most trips, the amount of time you save by driving faster is negligible.

In addition to following the speed limit, don’t forget to observe the other rules of the road as well. Use your turn signals, leave plenty of buffer, and obey stop signs and traffic signals to reduce your risk of being involved in a collision.

Don’t Drink and Drive

Finally, never drink and drive. Driving while under the influence of alcohol significantly increases your likelihood of causing an accident. Drinking responsibly means having a designated driver or calling a cab to take you home. When in doubt, play it safe and keep your key out of the ignition.
