Four Steps to Take after a Chicago Truck Accident

Written by Malman Law, reviewed by Steve J. Malman.

Chicago is a city that is somewhat well-known for its traffic. Although many people opt to commute via public transportation, the highways are lined with cars every day carrying people who are traveling to and from work, dropping children off at school, running errands, and going about their day. Couple that with the harsh winters that lead to dangerous road conditions, and it is easy to see how accidents can and do happen often. When a commuter car is involved in an accident with a large commercial truck, the damage can be catastrophic. This type of accident often leads to serious injuries that can be difficult to deal with.

If you find yourself in a situation in which you have been in an accident with a large truck, it is advisable to follow these four steps.

  1. Remove yourself from danger – After the accident, assess the scene to determine if you are in immediate danger. Are you in the middle of the highway? Have you been pushed into a lane of oncoming traffic? It is possible, pull your car over to the shoulder of the road. If it is not safe to do so, remain in your car with your flashers on.
  2. Call the police to report the accident – The next step will be to report the accident. Call the police as soon as possible and give them the details of where you are located. They will arrive on the scene and help to ensure your safety. They will also most likely attempt to ask witnesses to recount what happened, will interview both you and the truck driver, and might take pictures to document the scene of the accident. After they gather all of this information, the police will write up an official accident report based on their findings. This report can help your attorney establish the liable party in the accident.
  3. Seek immediate medical attention – It is essential to seek medical attention, even if you don’t think your injuries are very serious at the time of the accident. Establishing a record that you went to see a doctor after the accident can help strengthen your claim for compensation if you do start to notice signs of injury.
  4. Collect information and call an attorney – Your attorney can help you throughout the entire claims process and will be your advocate when speaking with the insurance companies.
