Illegal Immigrant Drivers Licenses Available

On Sunday, January 27th, Governor Pat Quinn signed a bill into law allowing illegal immigrants to receive special driver’s licenses available in October 2013 at the earliest. While the the bill is active now, the Secretary of State’s office released a statement explaining it is going to take a significant amount of time to train their employees and decide what paperwork will be acceptable.  However, all applicants will have to prove they have lived in Illinois for a year and have proof they are ineligible for a Social Security card. All applicants must also pass the standard written, vision, and road test and pay $30.

Currently known as a “Temporary Visitor Driver’s License”, the licenses will be quite dissimilar than an ordinary Illinois driver’s license. For example, they will clearly be marked “Not Valid for Identification” prohibiting anyone from voting, boarding an airplane, or purchase a gun. The background will also be blue instead of red, and they will only be valid for three years instead of one. The main issue, as all motorists agree on, is what insurance measures will be mandatory. Although they will be required to have insurance to get this license, many who oppose this bill are worried the immigrants will stop paying their insurance and this bill is only adding more uninsured motorists to the road. While this theory is one of many, uninsured driving is already a problem in Illinois and no one knows this more than a Chicago personal injury attorney

Motorists who are hit by an uninsured motorist have no choice but to go to a personal injury lawyer because there is no insurance company to contact. And if you sustain serious injuries to yourself, your passengers, or your vehicle, who is going to pay for it? Your Chicago personal injury attorney will tell you Illinois Law mandates each policy must have some form of Uninsured Motorist Coverage, but this situation is often complicated and may take time to sort out. There are many variables in these types of accidents which is why it is imperative to hire an uninsured motorist personal injury lawyer to be by your side and use the law in your favor.
