May is National Bike Month

Written by Malman Law, reviewed by Steve J. Malman.

The bicycle has a long history celebrated in America every year in May with National Bike Month. Bicycling has many benefits, but it also has its downsides, such as the challenges of remaining safe on the roads.

The League of American Bicyclists promotes National Bike Month in May. This event is promoted and celebrated in many American communities across the nation. At Malman Law, we’d like to take this time to recognize National Bike Month and remind drivers and bicyclists alike to make safety a priority. If you or someone you love was injured in a bicycle accident, our experienced Chicago personal injury lawyers can help.

Bike There

This year’s National Bike Month theme is “Bike There,” which celebrates all the places and reasons you can use a bicycle. The National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) reveals that bicycling has been relatively stable as a mode of transportation. Between 2009 and 2017, about one percent of all trips in the U.S. were taken by bicycle. In contrast, commuting data shows an increase in the proportion of workers who commute to work by bike by nearly eight percent. The same study showed that 39 percent of bicycling trips occur for social/recreational reasons, 21 percent for family, 20 percent to earn a living, 11 percent for other reasons, and nine percent for commuting to school or religious services.

Chicago Celebrates National Bike Month

The League of American Bicyclists ranks Illinois as the 16th most bicycle-friendly state, which is home to:

  1. 17 bicycle-friendly communities
  2. 22 bicycle-friendly businesses
  3. Ten bicycle-friendly universities

Illinois also has about 0.6 percent of commuters biking to work on average. According to their research, Illinois could use some improvement in the areas of infrastructure and funding, as well as policies and programs.

The Benefits of Bicycling

Warmer weather is in full swing, and there’s never been a better time to hop back on a bicycle. There are many benefits to riding, including:

  1. Increased health and well-being
  2. All the benefits of physical exercise
  3. Better moods
  4. Saving money on gas and car maintenance
  5. Not paying for public transportation
  6. Interacting socially with others
  7. Better on the environment
  8. Saving time
  9. The opportunity to explore and enjoy the outdoors

One accident can negate all the incredible benefits that bicycling has. Both drivers and bicyclists are responsible for driving safely on the road and watching out for each other. When accidents happen, you can rely on an experienced Chicago personal injury lawyer for reputable legal representation.
