Traffic Deaths Increase in 2015

In the United States there has been a recent increase in the number of traffic fatalities. In fact, according to recent data released by the National Safety Council, traffic fatalities are up by 14 percent already for 2015. So far, these increases make 2015 on par to be the most dangerous year for drivers since 2007.

The National Safety Council states that there were more than 18,600 vehicle deaths from January to June of 2015. They compared this to the 16,4000 deaths that were reported for the same six-month period in 2014 – which represents a 14 percent increase thus far.

Also, the NSC estimates the cost of those deaths and injuries to come close to $152 billion. The costs that add up to such an extreme number include:

• Medical expenses
• Funeral and burial costs
• Administrative expenses
• Lost wages
• Employer costs
• Property damage
• Productivity losses

This number is already up by 24 percent compared to the same six-month period in 2014.

What is Contributing to the Sudden Increase in Traffic Fatalities?

In addition to releasing the data, the NSC has also investigated what could be causing the sudden increase in traffic fatalities for the United States. So far they have found three main contributing factors, which include:

1. Cheaper Gas Prices and More Cars on the Roads – According to the NSC, the gas prices are already down by 30 percent on average since 2014. With the prices being so low, more vehicles are on the road and more people are taking advantage and driving – which means traffic and congestion. Because of the increase in volume, there is a higher risk for accidents and of course, traffic-related fatalities.
2. Increase in Jobs Means More Commuters on the Road too – There has also been a recent increase in the number of jobs being added to the market. Already the United States economy has added 220,000 jobs for July 2015 and the numbers continue to grow as the year goes on. The addition of new jobs means there are more individuals commuting to work – which increases the risk for traffic accidents on the road.
3. Distracted Driving Still a Cause – Unfortunately, distracted driving is still a growing concern in the United States. The NSC states that distracted driving is also a main contributor in the increase in traffic fatalities for 2015. According to the NSC, Americans are “addicted” to their devices.
