One of the leading heartburn medications sold in the United States, Zantac, was found to have a cancer-causing ingredient. More specifically, the Food & Drug Administration Agency (FDA) announced on September 13, 2019, that the main and active ingredient in Zantac, as well as its generic equivalents, is contaminated with a carcinogenic ingredient. If you would like to know your rights after a Zantac-related cancer diagnosis, consult with a Chicago Zantac cancer lawsuit attorney right away.
When we buy either off-the-counter or prescription medication, we have faith that the medicine is safe and does what it is supposed to do to heal an ailment we are suffering. Although this is generally the case, there are, however, times when this is not the case.
Ranitidine, the active and main ingredient in Zantac, was shown to contain dangerously high levels of a nitrosamine impurity known as N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), which is a cancer-causing chemical. The FDA did not immediately order a recall of the medications containing Ranitidine after it issued the report in 2019, but the agency issued a Press Release on April 1, 2020, requesting manufacturers to immediately withdraw all prescription and over-the-counter Ranitidine drugs.
If you have been diagnosed with cancer and you have been taking Zantac as a prescription or over-the-counter drug for some time, you may qualify to enter a class-action lawsuit against the manufacturer.
A class-action lawsuit puts together into one group many claims by different affected individuals against a common defendant, making the entire litigation process against that defendant much smoother, easier, and quicker for everyone involved in the litigation. In this case, you as the single, affected individual need not worry about the daily details of the litigation but will get your share of the compensation when the litigation is done, no different than you would have if you pursued the case on your own other than, likely, having the advantage of an even better outcome.
During a class-action lawsuit, the group of affected individuals will select and assign one of them to be their lead plaintiff to file the lawsuit on their behalf and all other members of the class suing the defendant.
This lead plaintiff will typically work with their lawyer throughout the litigation and will usually communicate updates back to the entire group through their lawyer.
If you qualify to be a member of the Zantac class action lawsuit, you may be entitled to various types of compensation, including the following:
