Belhaven Nursing & Rehab Center

Despite a sound record of fire safety, this Chicago nursing home has been rated as “much below average” by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services after past inspections. It has, at times, had a number of health deficiencies more than three times the national average, and has received more than a dozen individual complaints and incidents within a three-year period.

Residents in Need

Medicaid investigations have found deficiencies in the care given and respect shown to Belhaven Nursing & Rehab Center’s residents in the past. Residents have, at times, reported clothing that had gone missing, while surveyors have noted that some areas of the home were markedly cluttered or visibly dirty. Reports have also noted that not all residents were receiving adequate assistance with hygiene, grooming, eating and drinking. These and other deficiencies were reported as corrected within a month.

No report can take the place of communicating with a loved one. If you have questions about the treatment someone you know is or isn’t receiving in a nursing home, or you suspect abuse in a Chicago nursing home, call or pay them a visit.

Crowding and Staffing

In the past, Belhaven Nursing & Rehab Center has boasted a residency rate more than twice the national and Illinois averages. Because of this and staffing that has been previously deemed below average, residents received markedly less attention at this home than the national average. For example, in the past, individual residents have been reported to receive approximately 16 minutes of RN attention per day, which at the time was 30 minutes less than the national average and less than a third of the Illinois average.

If you fear that a loved one isn’t getting the attention they need or deserve, contact a nursing home negligence lawyer to learn more about this issue.

Accumulated Complaints

At one point, this home received more than a dozen complaints within a three-year period. In two cases, the home failed either to hire employees with no history of resident mistreatment or to report and investigate claims of abuse. In another case, the home was cited for having failed to write and implement anti-abuse, mistreatment, neglect and theft policies. These and other complaints were all reported as resolved.

Ask your loved ones about their experiences, and any problems they may have encountered in their stay, whether it be negligence, boredom or even nursing home abuse.
