Honda Airbag Recall 2024

Honda Airbag Recall – Feb 2024

Automakers make airbags using inflatable cushions that protect occupants from hitting car interiors or other external objects in a collision. Frontal airbags mitigate driver fatalities by 29% and deaths of front passengers aged 13 and above by 32%.

Despite the airbag’s role in protecting lives, manufacturers can make mistakes during production, exposing motorists to the risk of severe injury or death. In response to safety concerns, automakers periodically issue recalls to fix airbag defects.

Consider speaking to a trusted attorney in Chicago, IL, about your rights if you’ve sustained an injury because of a defective airbag.

Airbag May Deploy Wrongly During a Crash

On Feb 1, 2024, Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) issued a recall targeting specific Honda models with a defect that can unintentionally cause the airbag to deploy during a crash.

According to the recall notice, the front passenger seat weight sensor may short circuit and crack, failing to suppress the airbag as intended. Consequently, an airbag that deploys unintentionally increases the risk of an injury during a car crash.

The affected units include:

  • 2020 Honda Civic 2-door
  • 2020-2021 Honda Acura TLX
  • 2020-2022 Honda HR-V
  • 2020-2021 Honda Passport
  • 2020-2022 Honda Civic 4-door
  • 2021-2022 Honda Civic Hatchback
  • 2020-2022 Honda Odyssey
  • 2020-2021 Honda Ridgeline
  • 2020-2022 Acura RDX
  • 2020-2022 Honda Pilot
  • 2020-2021 Honda CR-V Hybrid
  • 2021 Honda Civic Type R
  • 2020-2022 Honda Accord
  • 2020 Honda Fit

Honda instructed the dealers to replace the seat weight sensors without a charge.

Honda may be liable for your losses if you’ve sustained an injury because of a defective airbag inflator.

A car accident attorney can create a solid case against the automaker to recover injury-related losses like medical bills, lost income, pain and suffering, or loss or enjoyment of life.

Defective Frontal Airbag Inflator

On June 27, 2019, Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) issued a recall targeting particular Honda models with passenger frontal airbag inflators installed as replacement parts, which may explode because of propellant degradation.

The degradation results from long-term exposure to temperature cycling, temperature, and high absolute humidity. The passenger frontal airbag inflator explosion may cause the sharp metal fragments to strike the driver and other vehicle occupants, causing severe injury or death.

The recall targeted approximately 1,657,752 Honda vehicles of the following models:

  • 2003-2006 Acura MDX
  • 2005-2012 RL
  • 2003-2007 Honda Accord
  • 2001-2005 Civic
  • 2003-2005 Civic Hybrid
  • 2001-2005 Civic GX NGV
  • 2002-2006 CR-V
  • 2003-2011 Element
  • 2007-2008 Fit
  • 2002-2004 Odyssey
  • 2003-2008 Pilot
  • 2006-2014 Ridgeline

Honda instructed the dealers to replace the frontal airbag inflator without charge.
