Nursing Home Abuse: A Sad Case

We often entrust our parents, aunts, uncles, and sometimes, even our children to a nursing home when they can no longer care for themselves and we need assistance to make sure that they are properly cared for. Then the unspeakable happens. Your loved one is afraid to talk on the phone and wants to come home. Uncle is in the hospital after he fell again. Aunt needed to be supervised because of her dementia, but she was left alone for too long and she choked on something.

Government Efforts are Not Enough

There are both federal and state laws and regulations in place that are meant to prevent nursing home abuse. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Illinois Department of Public Health work diligently to uphold and enforce these laws through inspections and penalties for violations.

Unfortunately, government efforts are not enough to stop some people from abusing or neglecting the elderly residents who depend on them for care. Nursing home abuse takes many forms, including bedsores, unexplained falls and fractures, malnutrition, wrongful or inappropriate care, medication errors, sepsis, etc. The list goes on and on.
As if the abuse itself is not enough, the consequences for such abuse are even worse.

Abused residents can suffer emotional trauma, mental and behavioral problems, physical injuries, or even death. All of these problems and more are often suffered by residents of nursing homes in and around Chicago and throughout the state of Illinois.
