Common Injuries Seen Around Thanksgiving

Compassionate Attorneys Assisting Victims of Holiday Injuries Across Chicago

Thanksgiving is all about spending time with family, friends, and eating one great meal. Unfortunately, it is also a heightened season for injuries. Whether it is a burn in the kitchen or an automobile accident, if your injury was the result of someone’s negligence, you need to contact a personal injury attorney to explore your options for recourse.

Most Common Injuries Seen During Thanksgiving

  1. Car Accidents – Car accidents are common during the holidays, especially Thanksgiving. There are plenty of families and cars on the road rushing to make it to dinner or not miss a minute of the game. The chances for an accident increase exponentially during this time of year, too. Also, with the cooler temperatures, there is a higher risk for ice and snow-related accidents. In some cases, there are heightened numbers of drunken drivers and distracted drivers.
  2. Slip and Fall Accidents – November is peak season for ice and snow, which means that property owners may be too busy with the Thanksgiving rush to actually clear it away – increasing the likelihood of a fall. Also, grocery stores will be overloaded with shoppers, which increases the likelihood that a spill of some sort will happen on the floors. If that spill is not cleaned up quickly enough, someone could accidentally slip and get hurt on the floor.
  3. Burn Injuries – Burns are common during Thanksgiving. Whether you are deep-frying a turkey or just using the oven, you could run the risk of burning yourself. There is also the risk for fire, and burns that come along with it. In some cases, a defective oven, microwave, or turkey fryer could cause significant burn injuries to you or your loved ones. Children are also at higher risk for burns during Thanksgiving, especially when pots are left unattended on the stove while adults visit with family and friends.
  4. Choking – Choking happens when a person eats too quickly or does not chew food properly – and it occurs a lot during Thanksgiving time. Small children are not the only ones at risk for choking, and when choking happens, it can be life-threatening.
  5. Food Poisoning – Whether it was a contaminated ingredient that you received from the store, or improper cooking, food poisoning also is seen more often during Thanksgiving. Improper handling of raw meats or improper storage of food items can allow bacteria to grow and lead to a violent foodborne illness. Those at high risk for complications following food poisoning should be extra cautious about what they eat this year – and who makes their food.
