Justin Bieber is the latest celebrity to throw his support behind anti texting and driving campaigns. The pop star is working with Drive Safe, a free app by PhoneGuard that locks a smartphone’s keyboard when it detects a vehicle going over 10 miles per hour.
According to E News, “Bieber was inspired by the Remember Alex Brown Foundation, named after a high school senior who died in a car accident that occurred because she was distracted by texting.
‘Alex Brown’s family lost her to texting while driving,’ Bieber said. ‘Working together with the [foundation], we hope to help teach teens and parents about the major risks involved with texting and driving so they don’t suffer the same loss’.”
Justin Bieber is not the first celebrity to lend his celebrity to the anti texting and driving cause. In 2009, Oprah introduced her “No Phone Zone” pledge asking drivers not to use their phones for talking, texting or emailing while behind the wheel. More than 423,000 have made the pledge, according to MTV.
Additionally, Allstate’s “X The Text” campaign has garnered support from the Jonas Brothers, former “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks and “Camp Rock” star Meaghan Martin. Jane Lynch of “Glee” fame has filmed public service announcements on behalf of LG Mobile Phones to caution drivers of the dangers of texting and driving.
